Roman Era

The Roman city of Sellium – nowadays called Tomar - was created about 2000 years ago. The Romans passed through it on the way between Olissipo (Lisbon) and Aeminiem (Coimbra), crossing the Nabanis River, nowadays called Nabão, through the "Ponte Velha" bridge, which, despite the changes it has undergone over the years, still characterizes this city.

Discoveries Era

With the conversion of the Templars into the Order of Christ, many of the Templar Knights became navigators. It was in Tomar that much of the voyage planning of the discoveries was done. The caravels bore in their sails the Order of Christ’s cross, spreading the Christian faith overseas.
